Theorem Proving Techniques for View Deletion in Databases

چکیده
In this paper, we show how techniques from first-order theorem proving can be used for efficient deductive database updates. The key idea is to transform the given database, together with the update request, into a (disjunctive) logic program and to apply the hyper-tableau calculus (Baumgartner et al., 1996) to solve the original update problem. The resulting algorithm has the following properties: it works goal-directed (i.e. the search is driven by the update request), it is rational in the sense that it satisfies certain rationality postulates stemming from philosophical works on belief dynamics, and, unlike comparable approaches, it is of polynomial space complexity. To obtain soundness and completeness results, the hyper-tableau calculus is slightly modified for minimal model reasoning. Besides a direct proof we give an alternate proof which gives insights into the relation to previous approaches. As a by-product we thereby derive a soundness and completeness result of hyper-tableaux for computing minimal abductive explanations. c © 2000 Academic Press

A Rational and Efficient Algorithm for View Deletion in Databases
In this paper, we show how techniques from disjunctive logic programming and classical first-order theorem proving can be used for efficient (deductive) database updates. The key idea is to tranform the given database together with the update request into a disjunctive logic program and apply disjunctive techniques (such as minimal model reasoning) to solve the original update problem. We prese...
متن کاملA short introduction to two approaches in formal verification of security protocols: model checking and theorem proving
In this paper, we shortly review two formal approaches in verification of security protocols; model checking and theorem proving. Model checking is based on studying the behavior of protocols via generating all different behaviors of a protocol and checking whether the desired goals are satisfied in all instances or not. We investigate Scyther operational semantics as n example of this...
متن کاملReformulation for Extensional Reasoning
Relational databases have had great industrial success in computer science. The power of the paradigm is made clear both by its widespread adoption and by theoretical analysis. Today, automated theorem provers are not able to take advantage of database query engines and therefore do not routinely leverage that source of power. Extensional Reasoning (ER) is an approach to automated theorem provi...
متن کاملA fixed point method for proving the stability of ring $(alpha, beta, gamma)$-derivations in $2$-Banach algebras
In this paper, we first present the new concept of $2$-normed algebra. We investigate the structure of this algebra and give some examples. Then we apply a fixed point theorem to prove the stability and hyperstability of $(alpha, beta, gamma)$-derivations in $2$-Banach algebras.
متن کاملAutomated Deduction: a Technological Point of View
There are recent successes of automated deduction techniques in various application domains, such as mathematics, classical and nonmonotonic logics, diagnosis, planning and within software engineering. We will briefly review some of them and observe that these successes have been made only after a careful analysis of the application domain as well as the deduction system under consideration. Th...
